The Chesterton-Porter Rotary recently welcomed Carmen Lynes into membership.  Carmen is the new assistant vice president and banking center manager for 1st Source Bank at their Indian Boundary Road location. Pictured are Club President Elect 2011-2012 Chuck Parkinson, Carmen Lynes, Club Sponsor David Perry and Club President Jim Anton. Carmen joins our club with past experience within the Michigan City Rotary Club working with their mentoring program.  The Chesterton Porter Rotary Club is now entering their second year of a STRIVE program.  STRIVE is the acronym for Students Taking Renewed Interest in the Value of Education.  For more information about STRIVE  club member Dr. Dan Keilman.  The Chesterton-Porter Rotary meets weekly on Tuesdays at 11:45 for lunch, fellowship and a brief topical program at the Westchester Library Service Center at 100 W. Indiana Ave in Chesterton.

2010 Board Installation Banquet

On June 8, 2010 the Chesterton-Porter Rotary Club held its annual installation banquet.  It was a fun filled night of fellowship and also marked the transition of officers within the Club.  Recognized for her efforts during her term as President was Christine Newton.  She was praised for her leadership of yet another successful year in Rotary.  The new board of directors was installed and a brief passing of the gavel ceremony to incoming President Jim Anton was held.  Newton was again recognized for her efforts and awarded her Presidential plaque by President Anton.  Also recognized that evening was Trent Albert who was awarded the Ed Pearson Memorial Award also known as the Rotarian of the Year.  The Chesterton-Porter Rotary Club is a philanthropic organization that serves the Duneland Community by making various donations and service projects.  Their efforts are supported by the four fundraisers done each year most notably the annual Fish Fry in April and the Chicken Barbeque in September.

Interact Bike Drive is a success!

The Chesterton High School Interact Club held a bike drive on Saturday, May 15th from 9 am-3 pm in the high school parking lot where they collected nearly 160(!) used and broken bikes from the community. The bikes were donated to Working Bikes Cooperative, a not-for-profit 501(c)3 organization based in Chicago. Working Bikes repairs used bikes and ships them overseas to the Gulf Coast, Ghana, Tanzania, Angola, Cuba, Guatemala, and Peru where they are highly valued for means of transportation. CHS Interact Teacher Sponsor Bob Kelly, as well as Chesterton-Porter Rotary Club President Christine Newton, oversaw the collection event.

Chesterton-Porter Rotary hosted its is first Carmichael Young Leader Competition on Wednesday, April 28th.  The club selected six participants from its pool of applicants to participate in the event.  The participants were chosen based on their qualities of leadership and volunteerism.  The winner of the event and a $1500 scholarship was Neil Hicks, a CHS senior planning to attend Indiana University in the Fall.  Neil performed the first movement of Sonata by Paul Creston on the alto saxophone while accompanied by Dan Pritchett.

Other participants in the event were Matt Keeley, Ben Mullin, Nicole Vasconi, Meghan Larimer, and Brittney Biddle. Matt performed a slam poetry piece entitled Alter Egoes.  Ben performed a piano medley of Jazz and Latin influence. Nicole did a vocal performance of Alleluia by Mozart while accompanied by Mark Johannson. Meghan shared some of her favorite artwork pieces with the audience.  Brittney read a fictional creative writing piece that she wrote.

Chesterton-Porter Rotary began the competition to honor Bill Carmichael and to promote civic leadership with CHS senior students by showcasing their writing, public speaking, and creative skills.  Bill Carmichael was a longtime leader in the Duneland community.

Salmon, Idaho Trips

Salmon, Idaho Rotary TripsThe Rotary Club of Salmon, Idaho is hosting several trips this summer as a fund raiser.

YOU’RE INVITED to visit Idaho’s Continental Divide country. The Salmon Rotary Club has partnered with local Idaho river and horse trip outfitters to offer vacation packages for Rotarians and their families.  The fully outfitted and guided trips include a 4 day river trip on the Salmon River; a 4 day horse pack trip to a high mountain lake in the Lemhi Mountains; and a 5 day river float trip through the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness.

The trips are scheduled in mid-July. A western-style BBQ hosted by the local club will complete these fun and exciting vacations. We look forward to your participation and to have the chance to meet Rotarians from near and far.
