The Larry James Memorial Scholarship Award is the result of proceeds from a trail race that CHS Coach Steve Kearney, Alisha Brown and John Marshall coordinate which is sponsored by the Chesterton Porter Rotary club. The race is called the “Bride of Zoy” and is held each year in and around the Indiana Dunes State Park. The scholarships are given in memory of Chesterton High School Coach Larry James who coached both cross country and track at CHS and was very instrumental in putting Northwest Indiana Cross Country on the map all across the state. Coach James was respected by all those who ran for him and his participation in Invitational’s across the state, by fielding outstanding and very competitive individuals and teams, he was able build awareness of Duneland programs across the state.
This year’s Larry James Memorial Award goes to Senior Linda Graff. Linda was a four year letter winner for the Trojan Cross Country Team. She, on average, was a Top 5 scorer for the Trojans through her sophomore to senior year. Her 5K personal best time was 20:06. She was named team Captain her senior year by her teammates and coaches. Her hard work, dedication, and enthusiasm for Chesterton cross country will continue to be seen in the younger runners that she had influenced throughout the last four year.
Tyler Rusboldt was the male reciepiant of the award. Tyler’s accomplishments include being a two year Captain, all DAC, all Sectional, all Regional, all Semi-State and a PR of 15:56. Tyler’s dedication and hard work helped establish him as one of the premier runners in Northwest Indiana. Starting as a freshman with very little experience leading to the breaking of the 16 minute barrier as a senior is a great example of perseverance. He led a very young and inexperienced team to their 12th straight state finals appearance. The Larry James award is designated to go to a senior that through the commitment to putting in long hours on the roads and trails becomes the best runner at Chesterton High School that plans on continuing his education and running career at a university. Tyler has committed to the University of Missouri to continue his running and education. Tyler Rusboldt is truly a deserving student athlete of this award.
